NIHT Part Of State Visit To Qatar

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa visited Qatar on the 14th and 15th of November 2023, accompanied by a high-level business delegation. This visit marked Ramaphosa’s first as Head of State to Qatar, emphasizing the significance of economic cooperation between the two nations. The delegation aimed to explore opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, including energy, mining, agro-processing, retail, healthcare, tourism, and shipbuilding. During the visit, President Ramaphosa engaged with the Qatari business community and invited Qatar to join in developing a portfolio of South African investments, in which both the Qatari sovereign wealth fund and private sector could participate. This gesture underscores the commitment to strengthening bilateral economic ties and the anticipation of successful outcomes from these high-level business engagements. The involvement of the National Independent Halaal Trust (NIHT), represented by Moulana Abdul Wahab Wookay, in the State Visit highlights the significant role of Halaal Certification in the meat trade between Qatar and South Africa. This certification is crucial for meat products entering Qatar, aligning with the country’s Islamic dietary laws and standards. The trade statistics further underscore this relationship. In 2022, Qatar imported meat and edible meat offal from South Africa valued at approximately US$44.7 million. This points to a robust trade connection, with Qatar being a significant market for South African meat products. Particularly noteworthy is Qatar’s position as a key market for South Africa’s fresh beef exports, where it accounted for about 9% of these exports in the same year. This scenario exemplifies the interconnectedness of global trade, cultural dietary requirements, and the role of organizations like the NIHT in facilitating and ensuring compliance with these requirements. Foods of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ- Barley

Author: Faheema Mahomed Ali Date: 11 October 2022 Barley is an ancient grain that was first cultivated in the Middle Eastern region 10 000 years ago. Today, barley is seen as a “functional food” or a food item that not only provides nutritional benefits but also have medicinal properties. Studies have shown that the regular consumption of whole grain barley has the potential to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases like diabetes type 2, obesity and even certain cancers like colon cancer.Barley is a very good source of protein and is high in dietary fibre which makes it easily digestible. Talbeenah is a broth/ porridge made of barley flour or barley bran, honey and milk. Sayyida Aisha رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا narrates “Whenever anyone complained of loss of appetite to the Prophet صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, he ordered to use Talbeenah and stated “By Allah who holds my life, this removes the dirt of your abdomen as one of you removes the dirt of your face by washing it.” (At Tirmidhi). The bioactive compounds in barley have been found to regulate gut bacteria and counter act harmful chemical substances in the intestines that could cause gastrointestinal cancers. Barley also contains phenolic compounds that have antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties which prevent cancer.β-glucan, a highly soluble dietary fibre found in barley, has been found to lower total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and thereby protect against cardiovascular diseases. β-glucan is also responsible for the reduction of blood glucose levels and therefore the management of diabetes and insulin resistance. Foods of the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ- Milk

Author: Faheema Mahomed Ali Date: 08 October 2022 he Messenger of Allah ﷺ said; “Whoever is given milk to drink, let him say, “Oh Allah bless it for us, and give us more of it” (Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah). It has also been narrated that milk was one of the beverages the Prophetﷺ liked drinking. The consumption of milk, specifically cow’s milk, provides the body with essential minerals and vitamins. These minerals and vitamins have roles in promoting growth and development, and maintaining physical well-being. The consumption of milk is important in bone mass formation and the maintenance of bone density. It is thus important in the prevention of osteoporosis.Milk contains high quality proteins such as whey protein and caseins, which provide the essential amino acids needed for optimal functioning of the human body. The amino acids found in whey protein and casein play vital physiological roles such as the transport of minerals like calcium and iron. They also support iron absorption and serve as antioxidants thereby protecting the body from free radicals.Recently, cow’s milk has a bad reputation due to the increase in the numbers of those suffering with lactose intolerance. Lactose is one of the main carbohydrates found in milk and the inability to absorb it causes moderate to severe gastrointestinal complaints. Other animal milk like goat’s milk, which was much loved by the Messenger of Allahﷺ contains considerably less lactose and is well tolerated and has the same beneficial components of cow’s milk. There is also a concern that drinking milk, which has a high saturated fatty acid content, may increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. However, research has shown that the saturated fatty acids found in milk does not increase total cholesterol or LDL levels (“bad cholesterol) and may in fact increase HDL levels (“good cholesterol”), thus providing cardiovascular protection. It is also hypothesised that the micronutrients found in milk and the peptides produced during the digestion of milk, both prevent the development of high blood pressure. Download
